When you meet Darcie Lanthier, you may think you’ve met her before and you probably have. Darcie is generous with her time and uses her many skills to improve lives in our community. She’s an entrepreneur with an extensive list of accomplishments and is always focussed on making things better for everyone.
During the 2019 election, Darcie and the Greens knocked on 12,835 doors and spoke to thousands of people, the top issue in Charlottetown was housing: Young people had no place to live, there were no homes for young families, seniors faced long waits and rents were skyrocketing. As a response, Darcie founded My Old Apartment to address illegal rent increases. This project and the accompanying Rental Registry is now and will continue to help PEI tenants.
As an energy systems technologist, Darcie has chosen to specialize in solar photovoltaics. She also performs residential and commercial energy audits, is a proponent of renewable energy, and has very definite plans to make our built infrastructure more sustainable. Efficiency benefits us all and is one of the best ways to positively impact future generations.
A supporter and promoter of Island artistic works, Darcie was a Founding Partner/Manager of Mermaid ART Inc., the foremost art publisher in Atlantic Canada, supplying artwork to hotels, public buildings and private collections, also operating an art gallery and frame shop on Grafton Street, in Charlottetown.
Lanthier also redeveloped ‘Thomas’s Old Stand’ an 1845 heritage building on Great George Street. She transformed it into the energy efficient Mermaid Suites a Canada Select 4-star Suites Property, named Downtown Charlottetown Inc.’s 2005 Business Improvement of the Year.
An active and enthusiastic member of her community, Darcie has taught business and computer skills, was an active/executive member of several Home & School Associations, and is a Life Member of Women’s Institute who also served on the Provincial Board. When there is a need for action, Darcie has stepped up to do what needs to be done, to help, to encourage, to support, to march, to host, to fundraise, to cook, to serve…. With Peter Lanthier, her husband of thirty years, she is the parent of, Ian, Phillip, and David.
Her knowledge, generosity of spirit, plain hard work and infectiously positive attitude always brings out the best in those she works with and for. Lanthier was honoured at the 2014 Green Party of Canada National Convention with the 2014 Community Involvement Award for her work with several Island groups; Citizens’ Alliance, Food Exchange PEI, Pesticide Free PEI, Voluntary Resource Council, Coalition for the Protection of PEI Water, Home & School Association, Women’s Institute, Legacy Garden, in addition to serving at both the federal and provincial levels of the Green Party.
Darcie is always moving from one thing to another but she’s happy to stop for a chat or lend a hand.
